Course Overview
The author outlines what a complete work up of the hip and groin with ultrasound should entail. Especially, in the young athlete, the hip and groin cannot be treated as separate entities.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand Anatomical Structures:
Identify and describe the key anatomical structures of the hip and groin region relevant to musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Distinguish between intra-articular and extra-articular pathology based on anatomical landmarks.
Master Imaging Protocols:
Perform a complete, standardized ultrasound protocol for the hip and groin, including anterior, lateral, medial, and posterior compartments.
Optimize transducer selection, patient positioning, and scanning technique for each region of interest.
Document and interpret dynamic maneuvers used in the assessment of groin pathologies.
Evaluate Common Pathologies:
Recognize and differentiate between common causes of groin and hip pain, including:
Iliopsoas bursitis and tendinopathy
Hernias (inguinal, femoral, sports-related)
Hip joint effusion and synovitis
Gluteal tendinopathy and trochanteric bursitis
Rectus femoris and other quadriceps injuries
Apply Dynamic and Comparative Techniques:
Perform dynamic ultrasound evaluations for hernias.
Use contralateral comparison to assess symmetry and detect subtle pathology.
Integrate Ultrasound into Clinical Practice:
Correlate ultrasound findings with clinical presentation and physical exam.
Ensure Technical Quality and Reporting:
Maintain high-quality imaging standards and documentation throughout the examination.
Understand Limitations and Pitfalls:
Recognize artifacts and common pitfalls in musculoskeletal ultrasound of the hip and groin.
Target Audience
Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, athletic trainers, physical therapists
